How to build Bello: budget upgrades and card choices
Spellseeker deckbuilding notes · Updated
Start with artifacts and enchantments that are useful on their own, then use Bello to turn qualifying permanents into attackers. Keep cheap ramp and interaction alongside the expensive threats. Trample helps convert attacks into the combat damage that draws cards.
What does Bello turn into a creature?
During your turn, Bello affects non-Equipment artifacts and non-Aura enchantments with mana value four or greater. They become 4/4 Elementals, keep their other types, and gain haste, indestructible and a combat-damage draw ability. Three-mana enchantments can support the plan without becoming attackers.
The animation applies during your turn, so do not count on these permanents to block on another player’s turn. Turning a permanent into a creature also does not make it enter the battlefield again. These distinctions matter when evaluating creature-entry draw engines.
Where should a budget upgrade start?
A starting package is Outpost Siege, Thran Dynamo, Gilded Lotus, Garruk’s Uprising and Beast Within. Each fills a different job: recurring card access, mana, evasion or interaction. Add the role your deck lacks rather than replacing every inexpensive card with another expensive threat.
For the representative nonfoil printings in the October 11, 2026 catalog snapshot, these five cards were each below $3 USD. That is a dated estimate, not a current checkout price or a total-deck budget. Open a card to compare its printings before buying.
What should you cut?
Look first at cards that cost a lot of mana but neither qualify for Bello nor help the rest of the deck. Equipment and Auras need a separate reason to earn a slot. A qualifying permanent that provides mana or cards can contribute even when attacking is unsafe.
Keep early plays. A hand full of four- and five-mana permanents can fall behind before Bello matters. Test opening hands and check whether the deck can develop mana, cast its commander and still hold an answer.
How does a damage-based board wipe work here?
A damage-based wipe during your turn can leave the animated permanents alive because Bello grants them indestructible. Bello does not grant that protection to himself. Exile, sacrifice and toughness reduction also need separate answers; indestructible does not solve every kind of removal.
Cards to consider
Outpost Siege
A four-mana enchantment that qualifies for animation. Khans supplies another card to play each turn; plan your mana so you can use the exiled card.
Thran Dynamo
Qualifies for Bello and supplies three colorless mana. Decide whether its turn is better spent attacking or helping cast another permanent.
Gilded Lotus
A qualifying artifact that supplies colored mana. It costs five, so use cheaper ramp to reach it rather than treating it as an early play.
Garruk’s Uprising
Trample helps Bello’s attackers connect. Its three-mana cost means it stays a support enchantment rather than becoming an attacker through Bello.
Beast Within
A flexible answer to a troublesome permanent. The opponent gets a Beast, so consider how that blocker affects your next combat.
